Lifeguard Certification


The Missouri Athletic Club offers the American Red Cross lifeguard certification course on an annual basis.

The purpose of the course is to provide entry-level lifeguards with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies as well as to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illness until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over. This course is only offered annually the week between the Christmas and New Year's holidays.

Prerequisites:

1. Participants must be at least 15 years of age by the last class session.

2. Participant must swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breathing control and rhythmic breathing. Participants may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.

3. Tread water for two minutes, using only the legs. Participants should place their hands under the armpits.

4. Complete a time event within one minute and 40 seconds.

*Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.

*Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object and then return it to the start.
