Basketball has been a part of the MAC’s athletic scene since the early 1900’s, and it is the sport with the record for longevity and continued popularity at the MAC.
From the winter of 1903 to the present, basketball has been a central component of the MAC athletic program. Over the years, the MAC has hosted several basketball events, including the National City Club Basketball Championships in April 2001. Twenty-seven teams representing 11 private clubs across the country played in the tournament, and two of the MAC teams, the Open team and the Golden Masters, each advanced to the semi-finals before being eliminated.
The MAC has also hosted the United States Basketball Writers Association banquet since 2018. The USBWA annually honors the top players and coaches in college basketball, and the MAC has been a part of this tradition for several years. Today, there are more than 150 players on MAC basketball teams, making it the most popular sport at the MAC.
